Rocky Aoki, born Hiroaki Aoki on October 9, 1938, in Tokyo, Japan, was the son of Yunosuke and Katsu Aoki. As a youth, he formed a rock band called Rowdy Sounds but later decided to pursue a career in athletics. Aoki attended Keio University, where he competed in karate, wrestling, and track and field. However, he was eventually expelled for fighting. Despite qualifying for the 1960 Summer Olympics in wrestling, Aoki chose not to compete. He later received wrestling scholarships from several American colleges and enrolled at Springfield College in Massachusetts before transferring to CW Post College in Long Island, New York. Aoki gained recognition in the United States as a wrestler, winning the flyweight title three years in a row from 1962 to 1964. In 1995, he was inducted into the National Wrestling Hall of Fame.

Using the $10,000 he saved from the ice cream business, Aoki convinced his father to invest in the first Benihana location on West 56th Street in New York City. Benihana is known for its teppanyaki style of Japanese cuisine, where chefs theatrically prepare meals in front of patrons on an iron griddle. In 1968, Benihana opened its first restaurant outside of New York City in Chicago. The company expanded significantly, acquiring the Haru and RA Sushi restaurants and opening franchises around the world.

Personal Life

Rocky Aoki was married three times during his life. He married Chizuru Kobayashi Aoki in 1964, Pamela Hilburger Aoki in 1981, and Keiko Ono Aoki in 2002. He had seven children from his marriages, including Grace, Kyle, Kevin, Echo, Steven (a DJ and record producer), and Devon (a fashion model and actress). In 2005, Aoki filed a lawsuit against four of his children, accusing them of attempting to take control of his companies. Aoki passed away in July 2008 from pneumonia in New York City.
