Early Life
Robert Parish was born on August 30, 1953, in Shreveport, Louisiana. Despite being tall for his age, basketball didn’t become a passion for Parish until later in life. He initially focused on football, baseball, and track. However, it was the encouragement of his junior high basketball coach that led him to join the team. Parish attended Woodlawn High School where he excelled in basketball, leading his team to win the 1972 Louisiana High School Athletic Association Class AAAA state championship.
Parish then pursued a college basketball career at Centenary College. Unfortunately, his records from this period are considered unofficial and not recognized by the NCAA due to a penalty issued to the school just before his freshman year. This penalty resulted in the removal of statistics and scores for affected students, including Parish.
Career
Parish began his NBA journey when he was selected in the first round of the 1976 NBA Draft by the Golden State Warriors. He played for the Warriors for four seasons before being traded to the Boston Celtics in 1980. Joining forces with Larry Bird, Parish formed one of the greatest frontcourts in NBA history. Together, they led the Celtics to five NBA Finals appearances and three championships during the 1980s.
After 14 successful years with the Celtics, Parish joined the Charlotte Hornets for two seasons before joining the Chicago Bulls for one season, during which they won the NBA championship in 1997. Parish retired after this historic achievement, holding the record for the most games played in NBA history with 1,611.
Personal Life
Aside from his basketball career, Parish also worked as the head coach of the Maryland Mustangs, an expansion team in the United States Basketball League in 2001. He led the team to a 19-11 record and quarterfinal appearance, earning him the title of USBL Coach of the Year.
Throughout his playing career, Parish incorporated martial arts, yoga, and vegetarianism into his training and conditioning regimens.
