Mercury Morris, born as Eugene Morris on January 5, 1947, in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, was educated at Avonworth High School. For his higher education, Morris attended West Texas State University, where he achieved great success as a football player.

In 1967, Morris finished second in the nation in rushing yards, behind O.J. Simpson. He set numerous collegiate records in his junior year, including most rushing yards in a single game and most rushing yards in a single season. Morris also held the record for most rushing yards across three college seasons until it was broken two years later.

His outstanding performance in college football set the stage for his professional career.

Career

After college, Morris entered the 1969 AFL-NFL common draft and was selected by the AFL’s Miami Dolphins. He played as backup running back and kickoff return specialist from 1969 to 1975. Morris had strong performances in the playoffs, leading the Dolphins in rushing in divisional games during their successful Super Bowl runs in the 1972 and 1973 seasons.

In 1976, Morris was traded to the San Diego Chargers. However, he decided to retire after just one season due to injuries.
