He attended the Illinois Institute of Technology (IIT) and served as a submarine officer in the U.S. Naval Reserves during the Korean War. Cooper later returned to IIT and earned a master’s degree in electrical engineering in 1957. In 2004, he received an honorary doctorate from the school.

Career

After working for the Teletype Corporation, Martin Cooper joined Motorola in 1954. As a senior development engineer, he developed the first portable handheld police radio used by Chicago’s police department in 1967. Cooper went on to conceive the idea of the first portable cellular phone, leading the team that brought this concept to reality in 1973. During his 29 years at Motorola, he also contributed to various technological advancements.

In 1986, Martin and his wife, Arlene Harris, co-founded Dyna LLC, which served as a base for several technology companies. GreatCall, Inc., a company under Dyna LLC, was later acquired for $800 million. Martin also co-founded Arraycomm in 1992 and served as its CEO until 2002.
