Kasem attended the University of Guam but left after marrying a U.S. Navy lieutenant at the age of 17. She worked as a waitress and salesperson on U.S. military bases throughout the Pacific Ocean during her first marriage that lasted for six years.
Career
After her divorce, Jean Kasem moved to California to pursue a career in broadcast journalism. However, facing difficulties in this field, she joined an acting workshop and started landing roles in TV series like Fantasy Island, Alice, and Matt Houston. She also appeared in the movie Ghostbusters in 1984.
Kasem gained significant recognition when she portrayed Loretta Tortelli, the wife of Nick Tortelli, in the hit sitcom Cheers. Although her appearances on the show were sporadic between 1984 and 1993, she became a memorable character. Jean also starred in the spinoff series The Tortellis, which had a one-season run.
Besides television, Kasem made guest appearances on various TV shows and movies such as Growing Pains, Family Feud, Cybill, Hunter, Hollywood Squares, Hope & Gloria, and My Two Dads. Together, they had one child named Liberty Jean Kasem in 1991. Jean also became a stepmother to Casey’s three children from a previous marriage.
Their relationship faced challenges from Casey’s children, who resented Jean for marrying their father. Towards the end of Casey’s life, Jean had a public and bitter dispute with her step-children. Casey battled with advanced Parkinson’s Disease and dementia, and his children accused Jean of preventing contact with their father. Legal battles and conservatorship petitions followed, culminating in Jean losing custody of Casey.
Casey Kasem passed away on June 15, 2014, at the age of 82. He is buried at the Vestre Gravlund cemetery in Oslo, Norway.
