Early Life
Iman Asante Shumpert was born on June 26, 1990, in Berwyn, Illinois. During his high school years, Shumpert played on the same basketball team as Evan Turner. He achieved great success in high school, becoming a first team all-state player and reaching three conference titles. He was also recognized as one of the top 15 senior players in the nation. Alongside his basketball talent, Shumpert also displayed a passion for Spoken Word poetry.
After graduating from high school, Shumpert attended Georgia Tech. During his time playing for the school’s basketball team, he became the fourth-leading scorer for the 2008-2009 season. Despite a knee injury that caused him to miss six games in the following season, Shumpert bounced back in the 2010-2011 season, leading his team in scoring, rebounding, and assists. He even broke Georgia Tech’s record for steals per game. Inspired by his success, Shumpert declared himself eligible for the NBA draft in 2011.
Career
Shumpert’s NBA career began with the New York Knicks, but he faced several knee injuries early on, which led to him missing a significant portion of his first season. In 2013, he returned to practices only to suffer a shoulder injury in 2014 that sidelined him for three weeks. Shumpert was later traded to the Cleveland Cavaliers in 2015, where he made a strong start and helped the team reach the 2015 NBA Finals.
After signing a $40 million contract extension with the Cavaliers, Shumpert faced another setback, this time with his wrist. Additionally, he had to be ruled out for a period due to a left knee issue. In the 2016-2017 season, coach Tyronn Lue began utilizing Shumpert as a backup point guard, and he achieved a career-best performance of 18 points against the Detroit Pistons. However, he ended the year with another left knee injury that required a recovery time of six to eight weeks.
In the following years, Shumpert played for various teams, including the Sacramento Kings, the Houston Rockets, and the Brooklyn Nets. However, he was waived by the Nets in 2019 after Wilson Chandler’s suspension expired.
