Rhodes began his professional wrestling career in 1988 with Championship Wrestling from Florida. He won the NWA Florida Heavyweight Championship in 1989.

In 1988, he made his debut in WCW and had feuds with Larry Zbyszko and Terrence Taylor. He also formed a tag team with Barry Windham and won the WCW World Tag Team Championship.

In 1990, Rhodes joined the World Wrestling Federation (now WWE) but left after a year. He returned to WCW in 1991 and had successful feuds with Bunkhouse Buck, Col. Robert Parker, and others.

In 1995, Rhodes returned to WWE under the ring name Goldust. He became known for his villainous character and provocative mind games. He won the Intercontinental Championship and had feuds with Razor Ramon and Hunter Hearst Helmsley, among others.
