He appeared on various television shows and made his first appearance on “The Tonight Show Starring Johnny Carson” in 1975.

Throughout his career, Gallagher released numerous comedy specials, including “An Uncensored Evening” (1980), “Stuck in the Sixties” (1983), “Melon Crazy” (1984), “Overboard” (1987), “Smashing Cheeseheads” (1997), and “Tropic of Gallagher” (2007). He also starred in films and even ran for governor as an Independent during the California recall election in 2003.

In 1980, Gallagher married Deedra Kay Higgins, but they later divorced. He then wed Geralyn Ann Hines in 1988, but they divorced as well. Gallagher had two children, a daughter named Aimee and a son named Barnaby.

Gallagher faced health issues in his later years, experiencing multiple heart attacks in 2011 and 2012. He continued touring until the COVID-19 pandemic disrupted his shows in 2020.
