Forrest Edward Mars, Sr. was born on March 1904 in Wadena, Minnesota, United States. He grew up estranged from his father and later took a buyout for Mars, Inc. to establish his own path. Mars pursued a degree in industrial engineering, which he successfully obtained from Yale University in 1928.
Career
After completing his education, Mars moved to England where he created the popular Mars bar. During his time in Europe, he also worked for Nestle and the Tobler Company. After returning to the U.S., Mars started Food Products Manufacturing and introduced successful products such as Uncle Ben’s Rice and Pedigree.
In 1940, Mars collaborated with Bruce Murrie to develop M&M’s, a brand that would become iconic worldwide. Despite being allergic to peanuts, Mars also introduced peanut M&M’s in 1954.
Upon the death of his father in 1964, Forrest Mars took over Mars, Inc. and merged it with his own company. He retired in 1973, leaving the business in the hands of his children, Forrest Jr., John, and Jacqueline, whom he had with his wife Audrey Ruth Meyer.
