  • Falco had a net worth of $10 million at the time of his death.
  • He sold 20 million albums and 40 million singles, making him the best-selling Austrian singer in history.
  • His most successful single, “Rock Me Amadeus,” topped the charts in multiple countries, including the US, UK, and Austria.
  • Falco died in a car crash in the Dominican Republic in 1998.
  • Three posthumous studio albums were released after his death.

Early Life

Falco, whose real name was Johann Hölzel, was born on February 19, 1957, in Vienna, Austria, to Maria and Alois. He survived a dizygotic pregnancy in which his mother lost her identical twins. Raised by his mother after his father left the family, Falco received education at a Roman Catholic private school before transferring to Rainergymnasium in Margareten. With aspirations of becoming a pop star, he attended the Vienna Conservatoire but left shortly after, feeling frustrated with the program. Hölzel then served eight months of military service in the Austrian army.

Career

Falco’s music career began in the late 1970s, where he became a prominent figure in the Vienna underground club scene. He performed music, engaged in stripteases, and participated in performance art pieces. Hölzel played the bass guitar for various Viennese bands, including Drahdiwaberl. It was during this time that he adopted the stage name Falco.

In 1981, Falco signed with music manager Markus Spiegel, and Robert Ponger became his songwriter. His first commercial hit was the song “Der Kommissar,” initially the B-side of his intended first single, “Helden von Heute.” The innovative mix of rap verses and a sung chorus propelled the German-language track to number one on the singles charts in multiple countries. Although the original version of the song didn’t gain traction in the US or UK, an English-language version recorded by the British rock band After the Fire reached number five on the US Billboard Hot 100.

Falco achieved his greatest commercial success with the single “Rock Me Amadeus,” released in 1985. The song topped the charts in over a dozen countries, including the US and UK. His album “Falco 3,” featuring “Rock Me Amadeus,” reached number three on the US charts. Despite subsequent album releases, Falco’s commercial performance declined. However, he still had international success with the single “The Sound of Musik.” Tragically, Falco planned a comeback in the late 1990s, but his life was cut short by a car accident before he could release his album “Out of the Dark (Into the Light).” Several posthumous albums were released after his death.

Personal Life

Falco was known for his ambition, eccentricity, narcissism, care, and insecurity. He had a reputation as a womanizer. In the 1980s and 90s, Falco developed addictions to alcohol and cocaine, which made him unpredictable and, at times, abusive. Despite pleas from his manager and collaborators, he resisted seeking help for his personal issues.

Falco married Isabella Vitkovic in 1988, but their relationship was strained by his personal problems. Prior to their marriage, Vitkovic gave birth to a daughter named Katharina. Falco believed that he was her father until a paternity test proved otherwise. Katharina later wrote a memoir titled “Falco Was My Father.”
