In the 1970s, he ventured into real estate investment as a side project after a decade in the private sector. In the early 80s, Sheets worked as a pitchman for a company representing a real estate authority promoting the “no money down” financial success path. He also taught real estate classes for the National Association of Realtors, which fueled his passion for teaching and led him to create his own home study programs.
In 1984, Sheets co-founded the Professional Education Institute (P.E.I.) with Mark S. Holecek and Donald R. Strumillo. The company faced numerous customer complaints and allegations of overbilling and refund issues. However, Sheets continued to garner attention through radio and television appearances, personally lecturing over 500,000 people on real estate investing.
