Bryant Gumbel was born on September 29, 1948, in New Orleans, Louisiana. He is the son of city clerk Rhea Alice and Richard Gumbel, a judge. Gumbel’s older brother, Greg Gumbel, also became a famous TV broadcaster. The family later relocated to Chicago, where Gumbel grew up in the South Side of the city. He attended and graduated from the De La Salle Institute in Chicago. Gumbel studied Russian history at Bates College, where he served as the editor of Black Sports Magazine.
