Bruno Leopoldo Francesco Sammartino was born on October 6, 1935, in Pizzoferrato, Abruzzo, Italy. At a young age, his father emigrated to Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, and the rest of the family joined him there in the post-World War II period. Sammartino attended Schenley High School, but his lack of English proficiency made him an easy target for bullying. To defend himself, he turned to wrestling and weightlifting, which eventually helped him overcome his disadvantages.
Although he narrowly missed making the 1956 U.S. Olympic team, Sammartino achieved fame in the world of weightlifting by setting a bench press world record of 565 lbs. without any elbow or wrist wraps. His strongman stunts caught the attention of local wrestling promoter Rudy Miller, who recruited him to enter the wrestling ring.

Bruno Sammartino made his professional wrestling debut in Pittsburgh in December of 1959, defeating Dmitri Grabowski in just 19 seconds. In January of 1960, he had his first match at Madison Square Garden in New York City, defeating Bull Curry in five minutes. His impressive performances attracted the attention of Vincent J. McMahon, the father of contemporary wrestling promoter Vince McMahon. Sammartino became an instant sensation in the WWWF, now known as WWE.
On May 17, 1963, Sammartino defeated Buddy Rogers in only 48 seconds to become the WWWF Champion, capturing the title for the first time. He successfully defended the championship for several years before losing it in 1971. However, on December 10, 1973, Sammartino regained the title, becoming the first two-time WWWF Champion. He held the championship for an additional three-and-a-half years.
