He was raised by his maternal grandparents in Alhambra during his early childhood, but later lived with his father in Rosemead. Mackie attended Rosemead High School before briefly attending Pasadena City College and Chouinard Art Institute. While at Chouinard, he studied under fashion design department head Eva Roberts and gained experience sketching for Frank Thompson at Paramount Studios. In the early ’60s, Mackie worked as an assistant and novice designer at Paramount Studios under Ray Aghayan.

Mackie went on to design costumes for various celebrities and entertainment icons such as Cher, Carol Burnett, Barbara Eden, RuPaul, Diana Ross, Bette Midler, Liza Minnelli, Judy Garland, Joan Rivers, and Tina Turner.

One of Mackie’s notable works includes serving as the costume designer for the entire 11-season run of “The Carol Burnett Show” (1967–1978) and designing costumes for “Mama’s Family,” a spin-off that aired from 1983 to 1990. He also worked as a costume designer for “The Sonny and Cher Show” from 1976 to 1977 and designed costumes for Cher’s concert tours. Throughout his career, Bob Mackie earned nine Primetime Emmys, a Tony Award, and three Academy Award nominations. In 2002, he was inducted into the Television Hall of Fame.
