What does Creon value most?<\/p>\n

In the famous Greek tragedy “Antigone” by Sophocles, Creon, the ruler of Thebes, is a character plagued by conflict and hubris. As the play unfolds, it becomes evident that Creon’s primary concern is with power and authority. **Above all else, Creon values his own rule and the order it brings to the city-state of Thebes.** This pursuit drives his actions and leads to the inevitable tragedy that befalls him and those around him.<\/p>\n

Creon’s obsession with power is established early on, as he asserts his recently acquired position as king following the death of his nephews in battle. The opening scene finds him declaring an edict that, in an attempt to maintain control and authority, forbids the proper burial of Polyneices, the brother of Antigone and Ismene. This decision sets the stage for the conflict that ensues throughout the play.<\/p>\n

Throughout the drama, Creon clings to his conviction that the law is paramount and must be upheld at all costs. He believes that his rule is synonymous with the stability and well-being of Thebes. Even when confronted with opposition, such as from his son, Haemon, who is engaged to Antigone, Creon remains resolute in his determination to maintain order. **To Creon, maintaining his authority and enforcing his decrees takes precedence over personal relationships and familial loyalty.**<\/p>\n

Creon’s single-minded pursuit of power is exemplified when he discovers that his own son, Haemon, takes issue with the harsh punishment imposed on Antigone for burying her brother. Though initially open to compromise, as conversations between Haemon and Creon unfold, it becomes evident that Creon values his own rule more than his son’s happiness or the stability of their relationship. Creon’s stubbornness and refusal to back down ultimately lead to a tragic end.<\/p>\n

Furthermore, throughout the play, Creon’s interactions with the chorus reveal his need for validation and recognition. He demands respect and loyalty from those around him, believing that his authority grants him the unquestioning obedience of his subjects. **Creon values the acknowledgement and submission of his subjects as a measure of his own power and importance.**<\/p>\n
