If you own a rental property and have taken out a loan to finance that property, you may be wondering if you need to file Form 6198 with your tax return. Form 6198, also known as the At-Risk Limitations form, is used to calculate the amount of loss you can deduct on your rental property if you are considered at risk for the investment. The answer to whether or not you need to file Form 6198 for a rental property depends on several factors.<\/p>\n

The first thing to consider is whether you are considered at-risk for the investment in the rental property. If you are personally liable for the debt on the property, then you are considered at-risk. However, if you have a nonrecourse loan where the lender can only take the property as collateral in case of default, you may not be considered at-risk for the investment.<\/p>\n
