Student loans are a necessary tool for many individuals pursuing higher education. They provide financial assistance to students who might not otherwise be able to afford college tuition, textbooks, and living expenses. However, what happens to the unused student loan money once it has been dispersed? Does it get returned to the lender, or can students keep it for personal use?<\/p>\n

When a student loan is approved and disbursed, the funds are typically sent directly to the school’s financial aid office. From there, the school will apply the funds to cover the student’s tuition and fees first. If there is any money remaining after all expenses have been covered, the remaining balance is typically issued to the student to use for other educational expenses like books, supplies, and living costs.<\/p>\n

However, what happens if a student receives more loan money than is needed to cover their educational expenses? In this case, the unused student loan money can still be used by the student for educational purposes. According to the Department of Education, excess funds can be used for “living expenses, transportation costs, and child care.”<\/p>\n

If a student finds themselves with money left over after all educational expenses have been accounted for, it is ultimately up to them how to use the funds. Some students may choose to save the excess money for future educational expenses, while others may use it to pay off other debts or cover emergency expenses. Regardless of how the money is used, it is important for students to remember that any leftover loan money must be repaid with interest after graduation.<\/p>\n
