McNall amassed a fortune in the 1980s from collecting and selling allegedly ancient coins. In 1986, he purchased a 25% stake in the NHL’s Los Angeles Kings and became the team’s largest shareholder. He shocked the sports world in 1988 when he acquired Wayne Gretzky, the NHL’s greatest star, from the Edmonton Oilers. McNall also purchased the CFL’s Toronto Argonauts in 1991.
McNall owned several successful Thoroughbred racehorses, including Saumarez, which won the Prix de l’Arc de Triomphe in 1990. He also owned a 50% interest in Trempolino, the colt that won the 1987 Prix de l’Arc de Triomphe. Additionally, McNall partnered with Gretzky in owning the colt Golden Pheasant.
